Spacing Study

Space is how interfaces breathe.

Spacing is invisible until it is wrong. It controls attention, grouping, perceived quality, and how quickly someone understands what belongs together.

Rhythm / Ratio

8pt rhythm
1 : 1.618Ratio gives the layout attitude. The grid keeps it usable.

Room logic

What this changes in the way I design and build.

What I noticed

01Material Design uses an 8dp layout grid to keep spacing and component relationships visually balanced.

02Golden-ratio thinking is useful as a proportion tool, but interface design still needs practical responsive constraints.

03The real goal is not mystical math. It is repeatable spacing that makes hierarchy feel intentional.

How I use it

  • Use 8px increments for small spacing and component padding.
  • Use 60/40 or 1.618-ish splits when a layout needs asymmetry without feeling random.
  • Create more space around decisions than around decoration.
